Waking up at night to urinate: understanding the causes and regaining restful sleep

Waking up to urinate at night: a more complex phenomenon than it seems

Our bodies are naturally programmed to allow for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep without the need to get up to use the bathroom. This ability is largely due to the secretion of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which increases during the night, reducing urine output.

When this hormone is not produced fully or if sleep is too light, especially if REM sleep is not over, the body is no longer able to hold back sleep. This causes the bladder to empty too quickly and wake you up even though you should be sleeping deeply.
